Method

  1. Wash the rice and dal together and soak them in water for about 10 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in the pressure cooker or pot and add cumin and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions, green chilies, and sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook until the tomatoes turn mushy.
  5. Add the soaked rice and dal and mix well with the masala.
  6. Add water and stir well.
  7. Cover the pressure cooker or pot with a lid and cook on medium flame for about 20-25 minutes.
  8. Once the pressure releases naturally, open the lid and fluff the rice and dal with a fork.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or papad.

  • You can add any vegetables of your choice like carrots, beans, or peas to make it more nutritious.
  • You can cook this dish in a rice cooker too. Just follow the same steps and cook it for 2 whistles in the rice cooker.
