Ingredients

Method

1. Rinse the lentils in a colander and soak them in water for at least 30 minutes. 2. In a medium-sized pot, bring the 2 cups of water to a boil and add the soaked lentils. 3. Add the turmeric, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder and salt to the pot and stir well. 4. Cover the pot with a lid and let the lentils simmer on medium heat for around 20-25 minutes or until they are soft and cooked. 5. In a frying pan, heat the vegetable oil and add the chopped onions and minced garlic. 6. Saute the onions and garlic until they are translucent and slightly browned. 7. Add the cooked lentils to the frying pan and mix well with the onions and garlic. 8. Let the lentils cook for an additional 5 minutes on low heat. 9. To make the rice, rinse the basmati rice in a colander until the water runs clear. 10. In a medium-sized pot, bring the 2 cups of water to a boil and add the rinsed rice. 11. Add salt to the pot and stir well. 12. Cover the pot with a lid and let the rice cook on low heat for around 18-20 minutes or until the water has been absorbed by the rice. 13. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve with the dhal.

Notes

  • You can add more or less water to the lentils depending on the desired consistency.
  • If you want a smoother texture, you can blend the lentils using an immersion blender or a regular blender.
  • You can garnish the dhal with fresh cilantro leaves or chopped tomatoes.
