Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice

  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp chana dal
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 inch ginger, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 3-4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Method

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Wash the toor dal and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  3. Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, and chana dal.
  4. Once the seeds start spluttering, add chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and green chillies. Cook until the tomatoes turn soft.
  6. Drain the water from the soaked rice and add it to the pressure cooker. Mix well.
  7. Drain the water from the soaked toor dal and add it to the pressure cooker. Mix well.
  8. Add turmeric powder and salt to taste. Mix well.
  9. Add 3-4 cups of water and mix well.
  10. Cover the pressure cooker with a lid and cook for 3-4 whistles on medium flame.
  11. Let the pressure release naturally and open the lid.
  12. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with papad or pickle.

Notes

  • You can add vegetables like carrot, beans, and peas to make the dish more nutritious.
  • You can also add some ghee while serving for a richer taste.
