Prep Time

Preparation time for this recipe is about 30 minutes.

Cook Time

Cooking time is about 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack of rice paper wrappers
  • 1 pound of ground pork or chicken
  • 1 cup of shredded carrots
  • 1 cup of thinly sliced cabbage
  • 1 tablespoon of minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of minced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Frying pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Wok or deep frying pan
  • Slotted spoon

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork or chicken, shredded carrots, thinly sliced cabbage, minced garlic, minced ginger, soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, cornstarch, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Take a rice paper wrapper and place it in a bowl of warm water. Let it soak for about 10 seconds or until it becomes soft and pliable.
  4. Remove the rice paper wrapper from the water and place it on a flat surface.
  5. Spoon about 1-2 tablespoons of the filling onto the center of the rice paper wrapper.
  6. Roll the wrapper tightly around the filling, tucking in the sides as you go.
  7. Repeat the process with the remaining rice paper wrappers and filling.
  8. Heat oil in a wok or deep frying pan over medium-high heat.
  9. Carefully place the spring rolls in the oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Remove the spring rolls from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  11. Serve hot with your favorite sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure to use warm water to soak the rice paper wrappers, as cold water will make them brittle and difficult to work with.
  • Do not overstuff the spring rolls, as this will make them difficult to roll and will also cause them to burst during frying.
  • Be careful when frying the spring rolls, as the hot oil can cause serious burns.

Recipe Tips

  • Try using different fillings, such as shrimp, tofu, or mushrooms, to switch up the flavor.
  • If you don't have a wok or deep frying pan, you can use a regular frying pan to fry the spring rolls.
  • For a healthier alternative, you can bake the spring rolls in the oven instead of frying them. Simply preheat the oven to 400°F and bake the spring rolls for about 20-25 minutes or until crispy.
