Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup moong dal
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp garlic, grated
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Equipment

  • Pressure Cooker or Pot with Lid
  • Knife and Chopping Board
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Spatula or Wooden Spoon

Method

  1. Wash the rice and dal separately and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker or pot with lid. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  4. Add grated ginger and garlic, chopped green chili and sauté for a minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add soaked rice and dal to the cooker and mix well with the masala.
  8. Add 3 cups of water and mix well. Adjust salt as per taste.
  9. Cover the pressure cooker or pot with lid and cook on medium flame for 3 whistles or 15-20 minutes.
  10. Switch off the flame and let the pressure release naturally.
  11. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or pickle.

Notes

  • You can add vegetables like carrots, beans, peas, and potatoes to make it more nutritious.
  • If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can cook it in a pot with a lid. The cooking time may vary.
  • You can adjust the quantity of water based on how you like the consistency of the khichdi.
