- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1/2 cup moong dal
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 1 tsp garlic, grated
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp garam masala powder
- Salt to taste
- 3 cups water
- 2 tbsp oil
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped

- Pressure Cooker or Pot with Lid
- Knife and Chopping Board
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Spatula or Wooden Spoon
Method
- Wash the rice and dal separately and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker or pot with lid. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Add grated ginger and garlic, chopped green chili and sauté for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder and salt. Mix well.
- Add soaked rice and dal to the cooker and mix well with the masala.
- Add 3 cups of water and mix well. Adjust salt as per taste.
- Cover the pressure cooker or pot with lid and cook on medium flame for 3 whistles or 15-20 minutes.
- Switch off the flame and let the pressure release naturally.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or pickle.
Notes
- You can add vegetables like carrots, beans, peas, and potatoes to make it more nutritious.
- If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can cook it in a pot with a lid. The cooking time may vary.
- You can adjust the quantity of water based on how you like the consistency of the khichdi.
